Why do we Need to Know Science?

I think that we need to have a good understanding of basic scientific concepts because it really makes the world around us clearer. We can look up into the sky and know why there are different types of clouds or we can know why water begins to bubble when we add heat to it. Ok, I admit, the last one is a no-brainer, but if we know why it works rather than just accept that it does work, we could apply the same principle to other substances. It also keeps us safe. Let's say that no one in this class knew anything about basic science. (I use only basic science because knowing advanced in-organic molecular bonding and cohesion -or some other such class-probably wouldn't factor much into our daily lives. ) Anyway, if no one knew any science, we could all get seriously hurt. We would have no idea that metal is a good conducter of electrical current, so before long, we would be zapped or we would try to fix something and it would break because we used wood to fix a car or some other ridiculous thing. Now these are things that you would learn not to do either from experience or from your parents, but they would have used observations to learn that themselves, which is how alot of scientific discoveries are started. In a more realistic scenario, science could help keep you safe while hiking or doing some other outdoor sport. What if you got lost or you were trapped? You could use science to help you! By using science, you could know what water is safe to drink, how to make water safe to drink, how to start a fire, and how to generally survive. Science could also give you a sense of satisfaction. You could walk down the street, see something happening, and say,"I know why that is happening the way that it is!" I guess that what I am trying to say is that understanding basic concepts in science helps you navigate through life making smart decisions, staying away from danger, and avoiding total ignorance and blind acceptance.

Hey madelyn I like your respone. Saying that we use science to survive which is very true, especially during camping or hunting. Also, learning from your mistakes could is another good example. I think the concept of us learning science to see how stuff works is awesome, because in power & energy class we learned about current and how stuff works when using electric current through a battery source, which is chemical.

This is a great blog. You clearly and throughly gave several examples of why its important to know basic science stuff. The blog has lots of good information but its also easy to comprehend. nice job!

You are very correct. Science is critical to survival. We need to know about the world if we are going to live on it. And i would just like to say that you are my hero. :)

haha i like what amanda said about you being her hero :)
but seriously you have real potential to become a writer or journalist because you thoroughly explain the concepts of science and really make it all tie together and make sense. honestly your probably the best blogger in our class :DD

thanks for all your praise! I wouldn't go as far as saying that I'm the best blogger in the class, but I really enjoy writing, and am considering several fields that use that skill. I think it's pretty cool that you got to take a power and energy class Luke, we did a little with it in 6th grade, but nothing like that. (that alarm you made was sweet..)Anyway, to sum it all up, learning science is important. (Oh, thanks Subbu, I love you too..wow...anger managment man...)

Very good. I totally agree with your survival part. Oh and thanks for making all of my posts look totally incomplete or in simplier terms bad.

random question- why is there a handicap symbol by the word verification?

I would answer your question Adam....if I had any idea whatsoever what you were talking about...
