Models

The link I found for this assignment delt with spacecraft. Apparently, Burt Rutan is designing a new spacecraft that will carry ordinary people (yes, just like you!) to the edge of space. Now, that phrasing kind of confused me. The edge of space....it sounds like a drop off, but I assume that there is a point where our atomsphere stops and space officially begins. Anyway, he unveiled a model of this new craft, called SpaceShipTwo. (Very creative huh?) So, when I found this article, one of the benefits of using models occured to me. By using a model you can show someone your plans and exactly how they will work and convince them to back you financially. They can also, as they did for Mr. Rutan, provide publicity for your new invention, which could help business by luring in customers. The second link I found for this assignment is more scientific. Just like we talked about in class, this article proposes that the tectonic plates move as a result of density. The model of this would be, of course, the lava lamp! As the stuff inside the lamp falls closer to the light bulb, it heats up and expands, which makes it less dense, so it rises, where it cools and contracts. The plates work in a similar fashion. The magma sinks closer to the core, where it heats up and expands, making it less dense, so it rises. This forms a circular motion, almost like a wheel, and so it slowly moves the tectonic plates. Now, if you didn't have a model for the motion of the tectonic plates, it would be a very big concept, and subsequently hard to grasp. However, if you can show the same concept using a model with a smaller, familiar object, the concept becomes much more accessible. Finally, a more personal one. I have trouble picturing how objects fit together in my head (ie building things; spacial sense) so making a model really helps me see if my idea is possible, and if so exactly how. That is, in my opinion, why models are necessary.

Marta, Thanks for all of your dedication to this blogging project. Of course, this post, like all of your others is very specific and thorogh. Did you see why he is calling it spaceship 2? What was spaceship 1?

you are an amazing blogger. just gonna state that first. :) i think you did a great job with this and you were, like mr. voight said, " specific and thorough."
way to go.
and "I have trouble picturing how objects fit together in my head (ie building things; spacial sense) so making a model really helps me see if my idea is possible, and if so exactly how"
i have that same problem too. so i'm glad you added in your personal opinion.

i really liked your point about how we use models to make things more simple for us to understand. That is very true and probably the best reasoning that i have seen on peoples blogs for why models are neccassary(spelling?)
well anyways. im going to mention that in my blog.

Nine letters. Excellent!!!!! You really are thorough in you blogs. And that point about using them to better understand them, I was thinking exactly that. And I like the lava lamp model example. You are an excellent blogger, in mine and probably many others' opinions.

Again. Good job. Simplicity was an amazing point on why we use models. You are still my hero.

Great post. I liked that it was very thorough and specific. I liked that you talked about how models affect and are helpful to you. I liked the article you used for your post. Unlike mine, it was pretty interesting. Good job on this post, as well as on the other ones.

I think a lot of people have trouble picturing things in their head and that's why so many people use models. I'm a visual learner and i have to use models all the time to understand things. I agree with you when you said models are a way to show people what you're doing. If I was going to go on that spaceship thing I would want to know what I was getting into. If the guy had models of the ship I would be much more likely to pay a lot of money than if the guy just explained it. In meetings and things models show that you're much more prepared than if you just talk about it. Sorry that i kind of rambled.
